Out the door,
into the quiet
The signpost at the bottom of the steps offers two directions, and neither of them is back to your inbox.

The Stillwater Spa
Warm stone, still water
A stone-walled pool kept at blood heat, a cedar sauna, and four treatments named after the weather they answer to. Book at the desk, or dial 4 from your room and mumble.

The rim pool holds thirty degrees while the highland air does whatever it likes. At sunset the surface and the sky trade colours for about twenty minutes, and conversation stops. Towels live in the warming drawer by the steps.

Two directions, no wrong one

Forest Trail
3.2 km · about 45 min · boardwalk loop
Raised boardwalk through the pines and over the reed beds. Flat enough for slippers, though we suggest boots. Woodpeckers guaranteed, otters negotiable.

River Walk
5.1 km · about 90 min · riverbank path
Follows the young Crocodile River upstream through the grassland, past two trout pools, to a bench that has ended several careers in the city.
Maps at the desk, gumboots at the door, and a flask of rooibos for the asking. Both trails are lantern-lit until 22:00.

The Boathouse
Cooked over flame, eaten over water
Breakfast 07:00 to 10:00, lunch by the windows, and at night a six course table from the valley at R850 a head. Trout from the water you are looking at, lamb from the next farm up the R540, bread from the Dullstroom bakery.
The six counter seats by the flame are kept for guests who like theatre with dinner. Ask for them when you reserve.

At altitude,
the stars are serious
The firepit is lit at half past five, blankets appear at seven, and at two thousand one hundred metres the Milky Way needs no telescope.
